Perfection is Over Rated

By DeNeen Attard

Striving for perfection only leads to endless procrastination, and  Endless procrastination makes you perfect in one thing only: procrastinating.                    ─Marianne Songbird

When you decide to abandon your quest for perfection, you can start living the life of your dreams. This will only occur when you make the decision to stop waiting for the…

  • perfect time
  • perfect dress size
  • perfect weight
  • perfect job
  • perfect mate
  • perfect friend
  • perfect location
  • perfect weather
  • perfect time to take your dream vacation
  • perfect time to have children
  • perfect time to get married
  • perfect time to ask for a raise
  • perfect time to launch your business
  • perfect time to change your career
  • perfect time to purchase your dream home

Let’s face it, perfection is a distant cousin of p-r-o-c-r-a-s-t-i-n-a-t-i-o-n. It is the excuse that many of us give when we are bound by fear and not sure what to do. Saying that you are waiting on the “perfect…whatever” is the same as, “I have decided to wait until hell freezes over to pursue my dreams.” Which is about right since you have just as much of a chance as hell freezing over as you do experiencing that “perfect moment”. The moment when all the planets, stars, moons, and galaxies for that matter, all line up in sync creating that “perfect” moment.

Rather than wait for perfect, simply prepare the best that you can and launch out into the deep. Take notice of the word “deep”. Don’t stay to close to the shore, you might be tempted to turn around and run for safety. When you launch out into the deep to pursue your dreams, you will have to work harder and smarter; you have to be resilient and create opportunities to keep from going under. Yes, there is a chance that you might begin to go under or even fail. So what─ the payoff is worth it! No one lives his or her dream without experiencing some level of failure. The point is, start living your dreams TODAY! Yes, tomorrow is coming but there is no guarantee that you will be around to experience it. Don’t wait another day, hour, or second.

Starting now, remove the word, “perfect” and all of the derivatives’ of the word from your vocabulary and launch out into the deep and live your dream life. Remember that it is okay to make a mistake. There are few mistakes in which you cannot recover. Choose today to no longer be ruled by fear or procrastination. You were created for greatness but it will never manifest if you don’t take the first step.  When you are tempted to draw back and wait for perfection remember…

“It doesn’t have to be perfect, to be beautiful”.
─The Nester
