Getty Images Has Two New Grant Programs That Seek to Diversify Stock Images of Women
New Photography Grants
Inspired by their partnership with Lean In, Getty Images is introducing two new grants that will seek to help diversify its image base. Anyone familiar with the world of stock photography understands that this welcome news.
I am sure many of you have seen the same dozen or so images of black women smiling, frowning or with both hands triumphantly raised in the air. The small group of websites that cater to blacks or women of color all use the same narrow group of images. In fact, the offering of women in general is limited and black women even more so.
If you truly want to be frightened, go to any stock image website and search the term “black girls”, you too would be cupping your brow just like the “worried black woman” in the stock image above. Though admittedly Corbis and Getty Images are a bit better than others and of course there is a price for that.
In any case, calling all photographers of color. Please apply below and let’s try and get some pictures of normal black folks living their lives. Please ma’am.
Getty Images will begin accepting applications online April 1st for both so you all have time to prep.
