Lifetime’s Whitney Houston Film Releases First Look Photos
Angela Bassett Directs Whitney Houston Film for Lifetime
Lifetime released the first images of the Whitney Houston film, Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett. The film premieres January 17, 2015 at 8pm EST. Recently other Lifetime biopics or True Story’s as the Lifetime Channel describes them have not been received as well as Lifetime might have hoped. In fact, the Aaliyah film, “Aaliyah:The Princess of R&B” was widely criticized and became the butt of merciless Twitter jokes and memes. Yet many have high hopes for “Whitney” as Houston’s long time friend and actress/director Bassett is at the helm. The film stars Yaya Dacosta and Arlen Escarpeta as Whitney and Bobby.
Bassett has been quoted as follows, stating that the film is a love story and will focus on the relationship between Whitney Houston and Bobbi Brown.
“I think we as fans, audience…those that looked on—we thought we had some say in it. We really didn’t have any say in their love affair. The say we have is of ourselves and our capacity to love, to love ourselves, to love one another and to just spread more love and joy in this world,” Bassett said. “But we really thought we had a say in their love affair…I think it’s a magnificent journey and I hope it will be a reflection into our own lives.”
The Lifetime website describes the film as follows :
Golden Globe® Award winner and Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett makes her directorial debut with the Lifetime Original Movie “Whitney,” featuring Yaya DaCosta (Lee Daniels’ “The Butler”) in the lead role with Arlen Escarpeta (“Final Destination 5″) alongside her as Bobby Brown.
“Whitney” chronicles the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer and model Whitney Houston and singer and songwriter Bobby Brown from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity to their courtship and tumultuous marriage. Throughout it all, difficulties followed the superstar couple while they dealt with the overwhelming rewards and consequences of the fame and fortune created by Houston’s meteoric rise that would soon overshadow them both.
Houston’s vocal performances in the film are sung by Grammy®-nominated and multiplatinum-selling entertainer Deborah Cox. The music featured in the film includes Houston’s hits “The Greatest Love of All,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman” and “I Will Always Love You” as well as Brown’s “Every Little Step.”
Yaya DaCosta is always stunning. If she can act and carry the film, we shall see. Here at MBL we are staying positive!
